Excursion destinations in the Zillertal A feast for the eyes, wow moments and places to marvel at
The Zillertal is not only an Eldorado for nature lovers, but the region also offers a wealth of sights and experiences for those interested in culture. Tradition and modernity come together here in a unique way and invite you on a journey through the history and cultural heritage of Tyrol.
Nothing going on? Not possible! The Zillertal is not only the self-proclaimed most active valley in the world, it also has a vibrant cultural life. While they are almost forgotten elsewhere, ‘in the Zillachtol’ old customs, habits and traditions are cherished and cultivated in a refreshing way. There is no shortage of sights and excursion destinations in the Zillertal, and a trip to the nearby Inntal valley is also worthwhile.
We will be happy to help you plan your leisure programme!
Cultural enjoyment and pleasure culture
The Zillertal has a special fondness for culinary specialities – and not without reason! At the Speckstube Fügen, you can enjoy Zillertal delicacies directly from the producer. Particularly exciting: the show dairy, where visitors can take an exclusive look behind the scenes of the traditional family business. Here, the secret of bacon production, which has been tried and tested for generations, is revealed.
In addition to bacon, the Zillertal also has a weakness for cheese. At the Erlebnissennerei Zillertal, you can experience how grey cheese is made – a speciality that is a must in the legendary Zillertal doughnuts. These, in turn, are an integral part of the many festivals that characterise the Zillertal throughout the year, such as the Gauder or Almabtrieb.
Away from the rustic sounds, the FeuerWerk in Fügen not only offers a feast for the ears, but also culinary delights for the palate. Concerts are regularly held in the extraordinary location of the timber manufacturer Binder, while the SichtBar is a popular meeting place for locals and guests.
Glittering highlights and noble treasures of the mountains
Anyone leaving the Zillertal on an excursion should definitely make a stop at the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens. This sparkling world of shimmering visions and glass dreams is a fascinating experience that will leave visitors in awe.
However, true treasures are not only hidden in Wattens, but also deep in the Tyrolean mountains. The Schwaz silver mine is one of the oldest and most impressive mines and offers a journey back in time. Somewhat newer, but no less impressive, is the gold show mine in Zell am Ziller, which takes visitors on a journey into the history of gold mining.
The Zillertal reservoirs with their sparkling water are reminiscent of precious stones. Depending on the time of year, the Schlegeis reservoir, for example, presents itself in the colours turquoise blue, emerald green or lapis lazuli - a true natural spectacle. In the Spannagel Cave on the Hintertux Glacier, you can come into contact with precious marble and be enchanted by the fascinating cave world. The Natural Ice Palace, a mysterious place of ice and darkness, is just a stone's throw away.
There's even more for the adventurous: if you dare, you can swim through the cold ice water - an unforgettable experience for anyone looking for something special.
Full speed ahead and off you go!
For fans of motorised transport, the Zillertaler Höhenstraße offers the perfect opportunity to put your head for heights to the test in the snow-free months. Cosy huts along the route invite you to take a break, and the Hubertus wildlife trail offers exciting insights into the animal world. If you prefer to take it easy and enjoy nostalgia, you can hop on the Zillertal Railway, which regularly runs under steam in the summer months.
The starting point for this historic journey is the railway station in Jenbach, where the Achensee Railway is also located. Coal and cogwheel take you up to Lake Achensee, the largest lake in Tyrol. There, visitors can enjoy a trip with the Achensee shipping company, which organises excursions and special events on the lake.
